Seeing Reuse: Collection Routing Optimisation

Distance-only planning beside emissions-aware planning, on the same requests, the same day and the same fleet.

One illustrative run, not a result

What am I looking at

Residents of Newcastle book collections of reusable items. Each business day a planner chooses which requests to collect and routes four trucks. The left map is a planner that only cares about kilometres. The right map is the same planner told to care about carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) instead, where an electric kilometre emits nothing at the tailpipe and a diesel kilometre does. Both face exactly the same requests. Diesel routes are vermillion and dashed, electric routes are blue and solid. Use the day slider or Play to replay the run, and the fleet buttons to change how many of the four trucks are electric. The requests are synthetic and every figure here comes from one illustrative run. The tested results are on the poster.

Live re-plan

Live re-plan runs on the presenter's laptop. Ask at the stand to try it.
